A man was held prisoner in a concentration camp during World War II. He violated one of the rules and was taken to an officer to receive punishment for his act. The officer pointed to a black door and said, “You have two choices. You can either go through the door on your left and face what’s on the other side, or you can stand before the firing squad straight ahead.”

The prisoner opted to go before the firing squad. He was shot and killed.

A guard who was standing by asked the officer, “What’s behind the black door?”

The officer responded, “Freedom.” There was a moment of silence. Then he continued, “If someone has the courage to face the unknown, they deserve their freedom.” He also noted that those who were given the choice had always picked the firing squad.
